Managing Printers

Managing Printers

Bowland, BMA & HeadPinz "Printer Portal"

Our company team has grown and become more mobile then ever before, creating some challenges for how we manage and roll out printers to end users. Our goal was to develop an infrastructure where any employee, from anywhere, can access the printers or secondary printers they need to work effectively.

Some of you may say, "why can’t IT just install them"? With the use of laptops and mobile BMA management staff this has become increasing difficult to manage.  For Example--  Our sales team travels from site to site.  If a printer gets changed out because it breaks, my team has to connect to each sales laptop and each computer in the building to make the change. While you all wait for this, you're unable to print.

Our solution--- Utilize existing infrastructure to provide easy access to any printer needed for business purposes.  In addition, automate the install process for computers that always use a specific printer.

We now have a couple ways for you to connect to a printer:

  1. Some printers are automatically installed for you, this is the most common as we try to automatically install everything to make it easier for you. These printers will show up an a specific format such as:
    1. Example 1: Lehigh-Dell-FrontDesk on Printers
    2. Example 2: Woodside-DellColor-Backoffice on Printers
  2. You connect to any printer based on where you are located. To do so, follow these easy steps:

1) Right click on the windows start menu

2) A big menu will appear and click on file explorer

3) Once file explorer opens you are going to type \\printers into the address bar

4) A list of printers similar to this one will appear

5) Locate and right click on the printer you want to connect to. Then click "Connect" from the list

That's it and the printer you connected to will now automatically install on your computer. It will be ready to use within just a couple minutes.
